Health Insurance and Benefits in Mexico Internal
What are Mexico’s statutory health benefits, and what do they cover?
Employers must enroll all employees with the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) and pay the necessary social security payments. The employer is subrogated by the IMSS in the fulfillment of its health responsibilities. The employee also makes a contribution.
Medical benefits include general practitioner and specialist care, outpatient care, hospital care, medications, dental care, rehabilitation, and maternity care, among other services. Both employer and employee contributions cover this care.
What health benefits do most employers offer?
Although a public system exists, it is not very common to use, so employees expect supplemental health care. It is common to offer medical insurance or a monthly allowance to both local nationals and expats.
If your supported employee does not choose our main insurance provider (MetLife), the cost depends on the plan they select, as well as who is covered (supported employee only or supported employee and dependents).
If a supported employee sources their own insurance plan, they must get a quote and share it with you. You should then let us know what the amount will be, and it will need to be grossed up.
Cost sharing with MetLife is not currently available.
If an allowance is provided, it is at your discretion how much is provided.
Please note it is common for dependents (spouse and children) to be covered when providing supplemental medical benefits.
How does an employee’s salary or level of seniority affect what benefits employers offer them?
The benefits offered to a supported employee with a certain level of seniority should be proportional to these to remain competitive in the market. For professional-level positions, we recommend offering a full benefits package, including health and life insurance—the most popular benefits in Mexico.
